i have heard some people complaining about protection I have licence version of Splintercell chaos theory which is protected with SF version 3. It doesnt do nothing to me never or ever did. i still can use alcohol 120 or daemon tools. As i found there is no warez version of SCCT because of a protection. itnever harmed nones computer. version 3.4/.5 is nowadays best protection and better worker. As i have been heard Aftershock uses version .4 or .5 better, improved and such, i people will understand: its improved more bug free and hope its not bad as dangerous. i still after one year and half got it on scct and on my pc, doing nothing than watching if my scct.exe and cdkey is valid. EDIT: for uninstalling a starforce: http://www.star-force.com/protection/users/ -------------------------------------------- " -SOMEONE |

I've not had a problem with StarForce on my machine when it was used in Silent Hunter 3, but I do know a LOT of people that have had nothing but grief with it.
The main problem with it, is that it seems to effect people randomly...sometimes it'll be the CD/DVD player can't read them, or times the 'drivers' that StarForce uses trashes their computers...there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it all. The sad thing is though, that StarForce, though very resistant to cracking has been cracked several times now, including some of the latest ones. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was one of the first to use the new version 3/4 and as of yet has no 'NoCD' crack. However it was still copied...albeit with difficulty. I find it ironic that paying customers are often the people who have the most problem with playing games they have purchased, where as those that have downloaded them as warez have a lot less problems. And given that the cracking groups are often better than the copy protection lot the whole thing seems a bit pointless... I'm personally paying for this game because I like the series and I like non-US game developers because they are more likely to make games that aren't just repeats of the same genre (ooo look another FPS, or RTS) and make something a little more unique. That being said I nearly always use 'NoCD' cracks for the games I buy, because I hate having to dig the damn disk everytime I want to play it, and I only have one copy and I don't want to loose it! I doubt very much that this won't be cracked at some point in the future. And as for Clones and mini-images...well I'll leave that for people in the know -------------------- I check at Sanity, but they didn't have any left...

Someone said that it would be using StarForce version 5 (the newest i imagine ?), so hopefully that means that it will have no effect on any other parts of your system
As to the drive noise, that is unfortunately unavoidable (barring hardware upgrades). -------------------- |

StarForce 3.5 is THE latest one that is out and about...has been cracked too, but only the 'lesser' version so it seems. Version 4 is due soon-ish though no-one has used it yet AFAIK.

I understand your point, as for me, I have free copy of Aftershock for participation on game testing, but I won't use until there will be some No-cd available. I won't let Starforce even touch my HDD as I simply hate something that alters your own drivers and thus your system.

Even if such a nocd becomes available, Starforce will still be installed during the installation of the game and as far as I can tell, the people that have problems with it, have them right after the games installation.

Starforce in SH3 creamed my 2nd harddrive and the DVD drive didn't work with it. That it works for most people is due to it's nature no guarantee that it will work always. Just upgrade your system and feel the wrath ...
Since i'm using my computer for work too, i can't afford to have it creamed by something like StarForce. Not for a game. This is final. StarForce was cracked for example for Silent Hunter 3 after one week. It's perhaps harder to crack than others but it's not the ultimate copy protection. It was removed from X2 from the developers, though more for marketing purposes rather than social aspects. Bye bye UFO: Aftershock. -------------------- |
