Full Version: Troop Name Editor

Hi,
i have written a troop name editor for anyone interested in this.

Downlaod and Manual are available here.

Hasn't been tested to the n-th degree because i don't get too much time to play. Did test with a few reinforcements and it seemed fine. The problem that people have been encountering with editing the pack.txt file in the LocalizationPack.vfs file is probably due to the fact that the file is UTF-16 encoded (unicode).

My application saves the files back in the correct format. You also have the ability to save your list of names seperately so you don't have to retype them when someone releases a new mod what alters the LocalizationPack. RTFM.

Anyway, standard disclaimer, use at own risk, backup your LocalizationPack file before appying changes etc etc.
Requires MS .NET Framework 2.0 to play. Link available on site.

Enjoy
Snotface.

Changing soldier names invalidates your savegames. Just thought you might want to know that. I discovered this a few months ago when someone released a mod that changed all soldier names.

Oops, okay, thanks.
I guess i should add the warning to my page.

If that's the case, then the same will happen to any profile moded with this and then the mod removed.

Correct.

The "proper" way to implement this tool is to not only edit pack.txt but to also edit a specified savegame file. It's almost useless to do one without the other.

I'll have to test it. I know some guys were having problems because they edited the pack.txt file with editors that saved in ASCII (UTF-8) while the proper encoding for the file should be UTF-16.
Can't see why they would save all the player names etc in a save game as that would just take up extra space, but until i do test, i'll leave the warning on the page anyway.

There's quite some stuff in the save games that waste space. Like the "long names" of equipment. While "short names" are loaded from the Localization.vfs file, the "long names" of equipment already in inventory is loaded from the save game.
Snotface
Thanks to both of you for the suggestions.
I'll do some experimenting. Updating savegames as well may get really messy though.

That's why no one has wanted to mess with troop names before now. Just hasn't been worth the effort. It's easy to edit pack.txt, while it's MUCH harder to correctly edit savegames.

Well, i've gone this far. May as well see what i can do. I'm off to work now, but i'll have a look tonight.

Hi,
okay, ive made the changes, and done some initial testing, but none of my saved games have progressed very far.
Does anyone have a decent 1.2 saved game that i can use to test against?
It just needs to have a decent amount of reinforcements in the squads.
Please mail one to me and then post here.
