Well I know its possible, maybe for some weapons you may restrict this option . . . oh wait I see it like this:
eg:
M16 Firing Modes: Single, Burst, Full and
BASH !!!Underbarrel Grenade Firing Modes: Single
Underbarrel Knife Firing Modes: Stab
Basically its another add-on option to add more realism, for
restrictions lets say that those laser, plasma or kits and so on items/weapons have
Fragile components and whatever so it will get
restricted. The Wargoth weapons are humongous, hmmn . . . maybe those could do a lot of melee damage but it would still depend on the short range and strength factor of the unit.
Its a lot of work I know but its nice to have this too . . . right!
eg: A Gunner with M60 shooting someone and suddenly an enemy commando/stalker goes for a backstab, gunner out of ammo. Gunner switches firing mode to
BASH . . . melee fight!!!
The usefulness is fairly acceptable and better realism is always good. Plus the
FUN FACTOR would be unimaginable!

Hmmn . . . where do live bro? From where I'm at these is common occurance even with the police and military, anyway its just me wanting an add-on mod for more realism. Okay this is a game, but this is a tactical game.
Question: What will you do if you didn't bring a knife into combat
(inventory slot small) teammates far and low on ammo and busy killing? You have guns with ammo, but the ammo didn't last what now? Change of eg. lets say the Gunnie is a Psionic and the attacking commando/stalker has a high level of Psionic too what then? Start running?
Did you ever played a mission in which your opponent has no ammo and just ran around. You know that sucks . . . if the enemy AI would be good it would check if it can kill with its current weapon as melee or hide? The usefulness is vast . . . thou this game's strategic difficulty is kinda low. Remember in old XCOM days when you can THROW your weapon to the enemy, BOINK* dead bugga.
